‘Modern Family’ star Sarah Hyland explains skinny appearance

“Modern Family” star Sarah Hyland says her skinny appearance lately is because of a medical condition.

The 26-year-old said in a social media post that critics have accused her of promoting anorexia in pictures she’s posted. Without being specific, Hyland said she has “basically been on bed rest for the past few months” and has lost muscle mass. She said her face is swollen from medication that is saving her life.

Hyland discussed her struggle with a kidney condition in an interview with Seventeen magazine published this week. She said she received a kidney from her father.

Hyland will star as Lisa Houseman in ABC’s TV movie remake of “Dirty Dancing.”

Pattinson, Sandler lead Oscar contenders out of Cannes

CANNES, France — It’s a long way from May in France to February in Los Angeles, but the Cannes Film Festival has often been a breeding ground for Oscar campaigns.

Standing ovations at Cannes, which concludes Sunday with the Palme d’Or presentation, appear likely to lead to awards consideration for a number of big names, including Adam Sandler, Nicole Kidman and Robert Pattinson.

Kidman had two films in competition — Yorgos Lanthimos’ “The Killing of a Sacred Deer” and Sofia Coppola’s “The Beguiled.” Sandler’s performance as a recently divorced father in Noah Baumbach’s “The Meyerowitz Stories (New and Selected)” was praised as a new high point for the actor. And Pattinson’s scruffy, scuzzy performance as a Queens bank robber in Benny and Josh Safdie’s “Good Time” was hailed as a career-best.

LOS ANGELES — Blake Lively is set to star in an adaptation of the best-seller “The Husband’s Secret,” from “Big Little Lies” author Liane Moriarty. CBS Films said Thursday Lively will play Cecilia Fitzpatrick in the film and also executive produce.

Moriarty’s books are becoming a fixture in Hollywood. Her book “Big Little Lies” was adapted into a popular HBO miniseries with Reese Witherspoon, Laura Dern and Nicole Kidman that ended its run recently. The prolific Australian author also has a number of books being optioned for big and small screen adaptations.
